The Bariatric Surgery Program

Before Surgery

The Screening Process
Bariatric surgery is not the right choice for everyone. The screening process helps to determine the best approach for the patient. Upon completion of the patient history form, our team will review it to determine if the patient meets initial eligibility criteria and a screening appointment with the surgeon is scheduled.

To be cleared for surgery, specific tests are required. The staff from the Bariatric Surgery Center and your primary doctor will need to assist you in obtaining these reports. Results must be forwarded to the Bariatric Program Director. This can be done by mail or fax.

PLEASE NOTE: Your test and lab work are your responsibility so please make sure to get a copy to keep with you. Our medical team reviews these tests. If any abnormalities are detected, you will be referred back to your primary doctor for further testing.

During the course of the screening process,

  • the client's health history is reviewed
  • an in-depth discussion of the surgical techniques occurs
  • stages of the program are highlighted
  • client participation stressing lifestyle changes is explained
  • expected outcomes are presented
  • Body Mass Index (BMI) is obtained.

As part of routine evaluation for weight loss surgery, you will be required to consult with  our registered dietician and psychologist.  This is to help establish a clear understanding of the post-operative changes in behavior that are essential for long-term success.
